The Elfman Cometh

Doug Elfman returnsDoug Elfman returns

The Las Vegas Review-Journal has been part of my morning ritual since I moved here. Early on, I noticed that the music reviews by Doug Elfman were always excellent. Not only did the guy write with a fluid pen, he said stuff that was worth paying attention to. And in addition to posting brilliantly creative negative opinions, his accolades were marvelous, too. It’s rare that a reviewer is equally gifted at panning and raving, but Elfman had the knack.

Then came the news that the Chicago Sun-Times had lured Elfman from the Strip to the Loop. I can’t say it surprised me too much. If I were the Sun-Times, I’d want a reviewer like Elfman, too. And I couldn’t blame the guy for movin’ on up.

This morning, I opened the R-J to find that Doug Elfman is back! There he was, smiling at the top of a new column called VEGASLAND. If I’m a little sad that he’s using part of the name of my old blog “Adventures in Vegasland,” I also have to admit that his edit made it cooler.

Welcome back, Doug! Not only am I glad to have your snappy prose and sharp observations to enjoy again, I’m happy that good old Vegas could draw you back.
