Jersey Boys: Hitting All the High Notes

I’ve never been a big fan of musical theater or the Four Seasons. So when my sister nagged me into seeing “Jersey Boys” at the Palazzo Hotel and Casino, I went grudgingly. Turns out she was right. The show’s a winner. Who knew the story of Frankie Valli and the gang was so darned entertaining?

A Day at the Races, Las Vegas Style

Horse racing fans can get their fix year-round, but the six-week meet of the Saratoga Racetrack in upstate New York is prime time for me. I grew up in Albany, N.Y., 30 miles south of Saratoga, and every summer I looked forward to spending some time at the track. Lucky for me, I can enjoy the Saratoga experience right here in Las Vegas — in any casino’s race and sports book.

Learning to Socialize in Las Vegas

Have you ever wanted to learn how to tango? Make yoghurt? Speak Japanese? Well, you can, right here in Las Vegas. The area’s many adult education centers offer courses from “Pet CPR” to “Recreational Pole Dancing.” The classes are fun, often inexpensive, a great way to meet people – and registration is just a click of the mouse away.

Sugar and Spice in Sin City

The neighborhood bakery is an institution fast disappearing from even the oldest cities and towns, replaced by supermarket “bakery departments” offering sheet cakes with suspect frostings. So imagine my surprise when I found three bakeries in Las Vegas worthy of my childlike devotion to all things sugar and spice.

Leapin’ Lizards, How This Place Has Grown!

Las Vegas began its big growth spurt back in the 1980s and 1990s, and it hasn’t let up in the new millennium. Since I moved here in late 1999, the place has grown by leaps and bounds. The building boom continues, the population has risen more than 45 percent, and the dirt road I took to the grocery store has become a six-lane asphalt thoroughfare. Why, we’ve even acquired a Komodo dragon. What next?
