Objective: Chocolate Indulgence

Friday, October 23, 2009

It has been a bit of a rough week, as I’m finally recovering from either a nasty cold or a mild case of the flu, which is the perfect reason to indulge in a bit of chocolate extravagance. One of the best places to get that extravagance is the nearby Freed’s Bakery.

Freed’s, one of Las Vegas’s long-time institutions, has already been the subject of posts by both Mark Sedenquist and Tami Cowden, so I don’t need to say much about it. This year is Freed’s 50th anniversary and they’ve already had their big celebration.

None of that mattered to me — I just wanted something rich and chocolate. Freed’s didn’t disappoint. I took home a piece of chocolate cake with mousse and ganache, and a couple of brownie-things topped with more mousse, some fudge and coated with a dark chocolate shell.

Mission accomplished.

Oh, and while I was there I got pictures of some of the most entertaining wedding cakes anywhere.

  1. Holly says:

Freeds needs no explanation. To paraphrase Mr Franklin, it’s proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

  2. Absolutely, Holly. I think old Ben was originally talking about beer. Which, along with chocolate, are two of the five major food groups. I’m not sure about the other three but I believe guacamole is one of them.
