Yo ho yo ho, a pirates life for me!

Yo ho yo ho, a pirates life for me!

This was an odd week for me due to unexpected challenges. First my dear hubby, Bill, had to leave Thursday before the crack of dawn to New York City for a big trade show, the 127th AES (Audio Engineering Society) Convention. This was expected, however, what was unexpected is that he caught some sort of creepy crud a few days prior to leaving and for some strange reason thought he should share it with me. Oh, as soon as the first cough escaped his mouth I started hitting the echinacea, goldenseal, vitamin C, Airborne, orange juice, raw garlic…but by Thursday night I wasn’t feeling all that well. By Friday morning I was head-achy, lethargic and my throat was killing me but after a few hours — and more of that holistic mess as well as some OTC medications taken — I felt better so I went to REI over at The District at Green Valley Ranch to pick up my runner’s bib and t-shirt for the Danny Gans Memorial Champions Run For Life 5K the following morning and then went over to Sunset Park with my nearly 19-year-old daughter, Erin, in tow as Clark County Parks and Recreation presented the 16th Annual Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival this past weekend.

Since we had planned on spending three days at the festival, Friday evening was spent wandering around to get the lay of the land and Erin wanted to try her hand (and her eye) at event photography. We spent the early evening hours bonding over discussions on what constitutes a good photograph and strolling through the rows of tents filled with recreations of Renaissance clothing and other 14th-16th Century German, Italian, Ottoman Turk, French, Celtic, Polish and British wares that encircle the lake on the North end of the park near the corner of Sunset and Eastern. We took pictures of jugglers, belly dancers, pirates, falcons as we planned what we were going to see and do the rest of the weekend, including attending and shooting some of the live concerts, maybe a royal parade or two and maybe even some jousting tournaments or gladiator battles. Even the bow and arrow and axe target games looked like something Erin and I could do together but as of this writing on Saturday afternoon, I’m curled up on the couch sucking down as much liquid as possible to try and quell the incessant coughing that has developed so going back for meat pies and ale may have to wait until next year.

Because of the unexpected germs my hubby thought he should share with me, I missed out on getting to wear my numbered bib for my fourth 5K this year. According to my Twitter friend R. J. Ryan (author of Danny Gans’ newly released autobiography, “Voices In My Head”) the turnout for the 5K fundraiser for Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, hosted by Donny Osmond, was in the neighborhood of 2,000 participants, which is about double of last years number, according to KVBC’s Alicia Jacobs‘ tweets. What a fantastic turnout for such an awesome cause. I had hoped to meet R.J. Ryan at the event but I guess that will just have to wait until his next book signing at the Borders at Town Square on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 2-4 pm. OK, I gotta go hit the OJ and Nyquil because I have too much on my schedule to be sick. Enjoy the pictures and see you around soon.

That photo of the pirate and his wench is outstanding! I love the swarmy look he is shooting the camera.

A whole bunch of fun events happened this weekend, and I only made it to one of them. Megan will share that one in her post on Wednesday. But I enjoyed the virtual visit to the Faire herein.
