Five Date Nights for Under $30

The stimulus package seems to be taking its sweet time kicking in around these parts, putting some strain on domestic tranquility. But what can couples do to keep the magic alive without putting a serious dent in their finances? In the spirit of pubic service, my wife and I set out to explore some low-budget date night options in Las Vegas. Here’s what we found. Continue reading »

The Peppermill Beats the Odds

In a city where a decade seems an eternity, the Peppermill Restaurant has managed to stick around since 1972. A lot has happened since then, but the Peppermill’s winning combination of good food, huge portions and friendly service has remained the same. It’s the reason three generations of loyal customers keep coming back, including me. Continue reading »

My preconceived notions about public transportation didn’t survive the trip. Continue reading »

Giving Up the Ghost in Boulder City

I’ve always been fascinated by things that go bump in the night. Like most urban areas, Southern Nevada has its share of purported ghostly venues, with the Boulder Dam Hotel topping the list. On a recent Friday the 13th (a coincidence, honest), my wife and I combined a quick weekend getaway with a little ghost hunting. Continue reading »

March 4, 2009

When my son-in-law, a Las Vegas Metro cop, suggested I ride with him on the Saturday graveyard shift, I jumped at the chance. After 10 hours of nonstop activity, I can say I learned a lot about cops, suspects, the Nevada legal system and even a little something about myself. Continue reading »

Johnny Mac’s Bar and Grill

February 17, 2009

Johnny Mac’s Bar and Grill is a Henderson institution. More than 25 years ago, John McGinty, a Buffalo, New York native, brought the authentic Buffalo wings recipe to Southern Nevada. “The secret’s in the butter and the vinegar,” John says. I guess the secret’s out. I’ve never had better wings anywhere. Crisp on the outside, moist on the inside, ridiculously habit-forming. You can knock off a couple dozen of those babies without breaking a sweat (unless you get the suicide sauce). In the Smith’s Center at Boulder Highway south of Major. Here is an article about one such visit to Johnny Mac’s by a LLV scribe.
