Ellen Ross has lived and worked in Las Vegas for more than thirty years. Once a dancer with the Stardust’s “Lido de Paris”, Ellen is a real estate broker, a Certified Master Gardener and a Nevada Naturalist. An avid photographer, Ellen can often be found hiking and kayaking in the many beautiful wilderness areas in southern Nevada. Ellen has two grown children, both born and raised in Las Vegas.

Desert lovers. Urban folk. People of neon and the night. What do Las Vegans know about … trees? Not so much, unless of course they come from somewhere else, as many of us do. Unfortunately, the trees from those parts usually aren't the kind that fare well here in the Vegas Valley. But if you plant a native tree in your yard, you'll create a pleasing visual effect, produce some shade, and frame your life with green. Not a bad plan for Arbor Day. Continue reading »

Water bottles, soda cans, candy wrappers, coffee cups – “people trash” strewn on the roadside. And what about all those patriotic red, white and blue recycling bins in our garages? They're empty! Does it surprise you to learn that Las Vegas households recycle only 2 percent of their trash? It doesn't surprise me at all – it makes me crazy. I'm on a mission to change things. Las Vegas got a rare Christmas present this year: a generous dusting of snow that piled up nearly a foot in the nearby mountains. No post-Christmas blowout sales for me. I grabbed my snowshoes and headed out to Mountain Springs, where ice jeweled the manzanita and little tracks told tales of animal frolic in the snow. Continue reading »
