In the last several years, Vicki Pettersson has made quite a name for herself writing dark tales of evil and vengeance set – guess where? – right here in Las Vegas. She gives interviews now, and appears at book signings, but I remember Vicki when she was wearing rhinestones and feathers on the Strip. Back then I was a nude dresser and she was a showgirl. Lots of people think Las Vegas is a cultural wasteland – that its residents seldom read anything more sophisticated than a keno ticket. That's just not true. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of many caring organizations, southern Nevada is experiencing a burgeoning interest in the arts. The Vegas Valley Book Festival, now in its seventh year, is a case in point. I popped in on some of this year's programs to see for myself. 
Over a decade in the making, Caution: Funny Signs Ahead is in stores just in time for the holidays. The authors, Megan Edwards and Mark Sedenquist, are also going to be in stores in the Las Vegas area beginning this weekend. As the owner of several Labs in my lifetime, I decided to check out some of the events built around this year's book, the bestseller “Marley & Me.”

Norm Clarke has been a part of my Las Vegas experience since I arrived here in 1999. We “met” the first time I opened the Las Vegas Review Journal and caught sight of the black eye patch on page three. I admit, my first impression was, “OMG, how silly. A celebrity gossip column gets higher billing than local news.” But it didn’t take me long to understand that celebrity gossip is local news in Las Vegas.
She calls herself "Satan's Angel, the Devil's Own Mistress," and her signature act involves flaming pasties. Now 60-something, Angel is a burlesque legend, and she had plenty of stories to tell at the "Miss Exotic World Pageant," held earlier this month at the Palms.
