Movies: The Hangover Part 2

”The

The Wolfpack is back. We first met them — Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakas) and Doug (Justin Bartha) — in 2009 in The Hangover, a film that made Las Vegas seem like the most fun place in the universe.

When Bridesmaids opened a couple of weeks ago, it was widely compared to the first Hangover film. The main similarity is that each is he story of what happens during the run up to a wedding.

This time, the Wolfpack’s on the way to Stu’s wedding in Thailand. He declines a bachelor party so, in Thailand, the guys opt for a campfire on the beach with a few American beers and some marshmallows. With them is Teddy (Mason Lee), the prodigy brother of the bride.

Well, you can guess what happens. Phil, Stu and Alan wake up the next morning in a disgusting hotel room in Bangkok with a monkey (Crystal the Monkey) who can do some pretty amazing things and, in short order, Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) the criminal from the first film and his cohort Kingsley (Paul Giamatti) enter the picture. Their dilemma this time is that when they wake up in Bangkok, Teddy is missing or, to be accurate, most of him is. Teddy’s ring finger with his Stanford ring is in the room.

Thus, they spend the rest of the film searching for Teddy, dealing with Bangkok and its denizens who range from silent monks to tricky prostitutes. There are some surprises on the way and, toward the end an appearance by Mike Tyson supplies a fun diversion.

I also found the soundtrack diverting. It features songs by Billy Joel and a parody of another of his songs sung by Ed Helms, Kanye West and Curtis Mayfield and a nifty, seldom-heard Johnny Cash number.

Look, The Hangover Part 2 isn’t quite as good as the original but a lot of that fact is attributable to the truth that we know these guys already. They don’t really surprise us. And, on the surface, this is just another bachelor party story. But it’s funny and very raunchy. The film was directed by Todd Phillips from a script by Craig Mazin and Scot Armstrong.

I enjoyed , The Hangover Part 2 because a laugh is always good and this is something that made me laugh. Will you enjoy it? Well, if you’re ready for a laugh and laughed at the first one, you should.
