Vegas Eye: What is that tower for?

Once in a while I find a place that I am not 100% sure about… For the 91st edition of this geo-puzzle, here is one of those places. I know what the official name for this place is, but I’m hoping you can share some intel about what goes on here and what that tower is used for!

What is this tower used for?

1. This building is part of what organization?
2. What is the three letter acronym for this location?
3. Why are high school students impacted by this place?
4. Where is this building located?

  1. This picture was taken from the parking lot of Nitrex of Wackenhut Services, Incorporate or WSI and is located at N. 5th and Losee. “McCall Empowerment Elementary School received a $500 donation from WSI Inc. in Nov. 2011, and employees collected canned goods to help provide nourishing gift baskets for 45 students and their families. For the past 15 years WSI of Las Vegas has been a partner of the school and Communities in Schools of Las Vegas.”

  2. Whoa, um…….. Well…. this is near Losee Road and N. 5th Street in North Las Vegas… but this tower is part of a near-top-secret Federal facility known as the National Nuclear Security Administration. Their web site states… the purpose as being….”Nuclear Nonproliferation, Naval Reactors, Emergency Operations, Infrastructure and Environment, Nuclear Security, Management and Administration …”

I didn’t know about WSI’s role in this location. Does WSI provide fire support services (like they do in Iraq)? I always thought their primary service was security at nuclear facilities.

And actually I took this photo in a different spot.

Primary question remains — what is done in that tower?

  3. Seems WSI is the next building over. I thought it was all one big complex.
This picture was not taken from the parking lot or near the parking lot or in some sort of driveway for or next to Nitrex off of Mayflower?

  4. Here’s more from the site:
NSTEC is the private contractor that conducts the public tours of the Nevada Test site and their offices are located here.
Site Office: Located in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Nevada Site Office (NSO) oversees operations for the NNSA Nevada Test Site. Due to the current moratorium on nuclear weapons testing, the primary mission of this site office is to support stockpile stewardship, environmental management, emergency response, and technology diversification.

Site: The NNSA Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) safely conducts high-hazard operations, testing, and training in support of NNSA, the U.S. Department of Defense, and other federal agencies. It provides the government with the capability to return to underground nuclear testing should the President deem it necessary. NNSS is contractor-run by National Security Technologies, LLC and is located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

NSTEC also sponsors Engineering & Science Scholarships for Clark and Nye county high school students. And they sponsor a high school science fair program in Clark County.

    So, excellent work thus far!

  5. But you were correct about the location of photo. I was standing in the SE corner of the cul de sac on East Mayflower Avenue (I had to look at the satellite image to confirm that).

But…. I’d still like to know what they use that curiously-shaped tower for….
