When retailers and designers want the largest choices in home furnishings, home decor and gift items, they come to the Winter and Summer Las Vegas Markets held at the World Market Center. The Summer Market just concluded, and for this occasional visitor, the “market” is nothing short of fascinating.
Three buildings are stocked to the rafters with sample merchandise, and one can literally walk and talk for days. My visit: just about three hours, but in that time I looked and laughed, was amazed and learned.
For example, as you’ll see in the attached video, I met representatives of Cannon Safe Inc, a company with several divisions that recently moved from California to Las Vegas and plans to bring even more jobs to the area. The huge safe they had on display was so impressive, I felt as if I needed to win the lottery and buy fancy jewelry to justify owning such a large and sophisticated safe.
I also talked with a representative of a California company that presents the work of 30 different artists. The art is hand made and uses many products from nature. Even the bag they gave me to carry their large (and heavy) brochure was decorated by hand. The brochure (from Natural Curiosities Art House) was lovely with art that was interesting, strange and true. I loved what they were doing and wished I were starting over in terms of choosing art.
Then I saw the chair with one arm, the chair that looked like a big “C”, the custom chairs for home theaters, the large red sectional sofa, the chandelier made of antlers and on and on. Despite my own lack of the decorator gene, I had a great time.
Although attendance at the Las Vegas Markets dipped during the recession, attendance has come back, we’re told, in record numbers. The projected attendance at the Summer Market was 50,000 plus. The weather was 100 degrees F (plus), so misters attempted to cool the open courtyard area, and bottles of cold water were offered free to attendees. As usual, buses were used to transport visitors from area hotels; valet parking was also available, and fortunately, within the World Market Center buildings, areas were reserved for tables and seating. The event also had a small dining guide, noting the locations in Buildings A, B and C where food service was available. Among the educational offerings was a two-day Interior Design Camp.
The celebrity name seen most frequently at this market was Donny Osmond as in “Donny Osmond home”. Donny, with his wife, Debbie, have entered the home furnishings market, and Donny participated in an evening Q&A session at the market. I was given a sheet listing the 17 different product lines where the Osmond name appears at the market, from wall tiles, lighting, fashion bedding, reclaimed wood mantels & shelves to mattresses, shower spas and scented sachets. When Donny himself wasn’t at the market, a life-sized cardboard likeness was available as a stand-in for pictures.
The Las Vegas Market is called “the most comprehensive, cross-category market in the western U.S. presenting 2000 plus furniture, home decor and gift resources”. The Summer Market ran from Sunday July 27 through Thursday July 31. Last January for the Winter Market, the opening day was shifted from Monday to Sunday in answer to buyers’ requests. That same schedule was in place for the Summer Market.
Las Vegas Market is produced by International Market Centers, L.P., “the world’s largest operator of premier showroom space for the furnishings, home decor and gift industries”. International Market Centers owns and operates 11.2 million square feet of exhibition space in High Point, N.C. and Las Vegas.
